Holiday Gift List 2014

12/2/2014

Comments

It's the most wonderful time of the year (again!) and I'm back with a list of suggestions for items that you can get your fiber-loving loved-one. Here's 10 ideas that might pique your interest (or at least give you an idea of what one knitting-obsessed guy has on his mind for holiday gift giving).

They asked for a Sheep!

Giving an animal is like giving someone a small business, providing wool, milk, eggs and more. Animal donations can provide families a hand up, increasing access to medicine, school, food and a sustainable livelihood.

Handmade Spindle

Picture
Aaron, (of Aaron Makes Stuff) makes these incredible drop spindles by gluing a bunch of colored pencils together into a big block, then turning them as a solid piece. They're difficult to get, but oh-so-worth-it. I love their clever construction and am happy to have one in my own personal collection.

Practical Bags

Picture
Yarn Pop Bag by Top Shelf Totes

Their bags are always so colorful and really well made! Because I have such an affinity for colorwork I appreciate the cleverness of the Double. (I also happen to like the dandelion fabric!)

What's on your mind?

Picture
Dolly Yarn Bowl

(If you're listening, I actually want this one myself!) lol

I think it's fun and creepy and quirky and cool. I also like that she used just a clean white for the glaze. It's fun because it shows what we have on our minds most of the time... YARN!

Yarn Shop Gift Card

Picture
If your gift recipient has a local yarn shop (LYS) that they frequent, give that shop a call and see if they offer gift certificates or gift cards. If there's no local shop near you, consider purchasing a card from Churchmouse! They're a beautiful shop on Bainbridge Island, (Seattle) Washington, and everything they do is done with beauty, style, class, and grace. It's a "must visit" shop when in the area, and the next best thing is receiving a package of yarn (or tea!) from them in the post.

Give, Give, Give

For me, the holidays are more than just a chance to recognize those I care about... it's also a time to support others in need. Kiva is a fantastic nonprofit that uses microloans and croudfunding to support and back folks working to make their lives and communities better. It's also a gift that keeps on giving since the loans are repaid, and then you have the chance to re-lend the money over and over! You can also email the gift certificate which makes it a great gift for friends online.

Get Craftsy!

Picture
OK. You might not know what Craftsy is... it's an educational website that offers classes in all kinds of subjects (including knitting, spinning, crochet, and weaving!) that are led by industry professionals. No need to choose which class to give... just give a gift card and let them decide. Better yet, up the amount a little and offer them two or even three classes!

Shiny, Shiny!

Picture
Owl Knitting Stitch Marker Beaded Necklace

I love the idea of this cute necklace. The owl is adorable, and I think that the clasp holding all those stitch markers is beyond clever. Need a stitch marker? There they are... right there on your necklace!

Handwoven Chevron Scarf

Picture
A nice big handwoven scarf feels so comforting on chilly, snowy days. (OK, we don't have snow in San Francisco, but we do have chilly, foggy, sometimes rainy days... and this kind of wrap is wonderful on those days.)

If the recipient only knits or crochets, giving a woven scarf might even provide inspiration to consider exploring other areas of the fiber arts.

So there you have it - my list for 2014 of some of the goodies that have caught my eye.

Disclaimer: I don't get anything from sharing these links with you (other than the joy of doing it) - I'm not paid by these folks or compensated in any way. It's done in the hopes that folks who really aren't sure what to get their fiber lover will find it useful.

Happy Holidays!
